Local radio personality Kenn McCloud collapsed during a meeting in Bakersfield three weeks ago and underwent heart valve repair and a single bypass surgery. Wednesday, 17 News learned McCloud has also been diagnosed with a toxoplasma infection.
McCloud's wife Crystal says his body was invaded by a parasite which weakened his immune system, caused his brain to swell and his internal organs to fail.
"It's a germ commonly found in a cat's (intestinal) track, so anything that is contaminated by the feces of cats, such as your hands, and you put your hands in your mouth or eat something before washing your hands, that's a common way to get infected, but there are other routes," said Doctor Claudia Jonah with the Kern County Public Health Department.
Dr. Jonah says the best way to protect yourself from a toxoplasma infection is to wear gloves while your cleaning out the kitty box, or wash your hands thoroughly afterwards. That goes for yard work and gardening too.
McCloud is currently undergoing dialysis for renal failure. The swelling in his brain is coming down and he is slowly regaining his memory.
Colleagues in the radio business are throwing a benefit concert for McCloud. The concert is being coordinated by KUZZ radio and will feature the lead singer from "Alabama", Randy Owen.
The Kenn McCloud benefit concert will be held Monday, Sept. 22 at Buck Owens' Crystal Palace. Tickets for the concert are on sale now.
I have to say, I have been in contact with the folks at KUZZ (and may have some other news to report soon...), and they have been great about this. Totally class acts. I'm glad to know they have determined the cause. It won't do any good on the damage his body has already suffered, but it will help him not to get worse.
